I broke off the trany filter housing on my new JD 4200 Saturday. When I removed the trany filter, it was full of metal shavings. The dealer said this is common with new tractors. Anybody see this before?

Any new trans. will have shaving in the oil. Cars, tractors, motorbikes, etc. its just the gears are seating in during break-in. Make sure you change your filter and hydralic fluid in the first 50hrs or so. That way you can get rid of the break-in garbage. The shaving you will see will be less and less over the coarse of your maintenance. ....

Yep. common. its one of the powerful arguments against having common transmission and anything else oil. Transmissions do shed particles. I've never heard of it being a problem. Change the fluid often and don't worry about it.The gross particles will stop being so numerous, but you will always have some.Magnetic drain plugs make some people feel better about the particles.Your dealer is probably right on this one. If you are nervous, ask him to change the oil and look at the particles himself. ....
